Checking-in

Just a quick note. This year’s mothing ended in a bang a good month ago once the rains started and the temperature dropped. I’d hoped to get to Lillooet one more time but it didn’t work out: house maintenance took priority. Boo.

This last week I’ve been spending a little time revamping the source code for the BC Leps curated species page. My primary goal is to add in a “New Additions” section that lists newly added species to the BC Checklist (surprisingly bloody tough!). That’s something I’m particularly curious about, and I think it would help others too. My secondary goal is more technical. I originally wrote the script very quickly intending it as a one-off, and although I open-sourced it, I didn’t document it anywhere near well enough or promoted it to encourage others to use. So this time round I’m improving and modernizing the code, migrating to Typescript and Vite and properly thinking about the interface for data generation and presentation. Should be a whole lot better. Once that’s done I’ll actually let people know it exists.

Anyway, that’s what’s up. Oh! And I’ve booked an AirBnB in Golden, BC for a month next year to moth the region. I love that area – the plantlife around Yoho National Park really blew me away so I’m especially curious to see what moths turn up.
